This week in the African startup ecosystem, several notable events unfolded. The ongoing drama at Copia Global continues as they seek fresh funding following significant layoffs. Just two weeks ago, Copia entered administration after failing to secure funding, and last week they shut down operations in Central and Eastern Kenya, highlighting the turbulent times in the e-commerce sector within the African startup ecosystem.

In other developments, Egyptian prop-tech startup Birdnest raised pre-Series A funding for expansion. Zambian construction e-commerce startup Bosso secured $400,000 in pre-seed funding, emphasizing the growing interest in real estate and construction technology. Meanwhile, Nigerian fintech startups are grappling with high costs, potentially spending over $1 million on KYC address verification, showcasing the financial challenges in the sector.

On a positive note, YC-backed Elevate, which started in war-torn Sudan, now provides fintech services to freelancers globally, demonstrating resilience and innovation. However, Kenya’s data analytics startup Gro Intelligence has shut down, reflecting the harsh realities many African startups face. Additionally, Egyptian startup Mal Bazaar acquired a licensed brokerage to expand its insurtech platform, and Ghanaian clean-tech startup Kofa is taking its battery-swapping system to Kenya and Togo.

Other notable news includes South African payment orchestration startup Revio rebranding to Precium after global growth exceeded expectations, and Nigerian digital identity startup Seamfix planning expansion across the continent. These developments highlight the diverse challenges and opportunities shaping the African startup ecosystem.
